If you’ve been following our progress on the ‘Where we are now’ tab you may have noted that our mission statement on that website is ‘Never a dull moment!’. This strapline has certainly been true for this passage. We have been challenged by lack of wind, very occasionally too much wind and wind in the wrong direction (trade winds should run NE and we have had SE, S’ly and SW’erlies). Our sail plan has changed 60 times in the 770nm, 9 day passage. Our speed log jammed - so James went into the water with snorkel, mask and screwdriver to fix the problem (300nm from land). Claire made a Christmas cake, fruit cake, flapjacks and loaves of bread (James failed to provide the fish!) in addition to lunches, suppers and the odd cooked breakfast. Atlantic spotted dolphins came and played alongside Ocean Rainbow much to our delight and we were treated to spectacular sunrises, sunsets and a couple of astonishing ‘moon rises’. The stars were spectacular but, despite looking in the right place, we didn’t spot Comet Ison. The last 60nm of the passage were challenging to say the least with 40 knot winds but daft as it may sound, we are rather sad that the trip has come to an end! We are now looking forward to crossing to the Caribbean – we just have to pick our weather window. We have put a more detailed account and photos on the RTW page if you have time to read it!
