Peregrine and Honey Ryder provided the transport– poor Yamahaha lacking the horsepower required for this trip! We loaded up drinks and picnic, sunscreen and mozzie repellent and set off up the Rivière Salée to Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. The river is singularly lacking in wildlife but once in the main basin we did see a couple of islands loaded with egrets and the inevitable frigate birds wheeling overhead waiting to steal any fish the egrets caught. We didn’t stay long in the basin as the wind got up so we decided to retire to the shelter of the 'salty' river and mangroves for our picnic. James (forever the Recce Officer) had spied a bit of land that looked hopeful as a picnic site so we made our way through the very shallow mangrove swamp and pitched camp. We had a great picnic, a few bevvies and then it was home again to tidy up before meeting for sundowners on Ocean Rainbow. Another hard day in the life of a cruiser!
