We hired a car for a whistlestop (James drove!) tour of Lanzarote. What a brilliant day we had. First, we visited Timanfaya National Park and saw a geyser in action, potatoes cooked over a volcano and picked up hot sand, not to mention the tour around the park to see more volcanoes, lava fields and rock strata caused by the ocean pushing up through the earth’s surface. Our tour was made all the better by Elliot’s commentary – a geographer cum laude in our midst! We then went off to see the other sights, had a picnic on black sand, stopped off at the salt pans, visited Playa Blanca (and a chandlery!), viewed Papagayo beach then on to a family Bodega for a wine tasting session with our final stop at the northern end of the island for spectacular views across to La Graciosa. And, as you would expect, we rounded off the day with a couple of beers at a local hostelry! Click here for some more photos and a longer version of the trip.
