Suriname at the gallop

Paramaribo 003Paramaribo 090Formalities for yachts are somewhat laborious in Suriname so we took a shortcut;  Nereid’s Rally organised for us to cross the river by water taxi and a car took us to Paramaribo.   First off was lunch where we enjoyed ‘Pom’ the local dish made from grated tajer (elephant leaf) and chicken – rich, slightly sweet and very delicious.  Then we did a ‘Short’ whistle-stop tour of the sights: Mosque and Synagogue sitting peacefully side by side, President’s Residence, Palmentiun (Palm Tree Garden) and Fort Zeelandia, before retiring to our hotel for a kip.  Then it was off for an outstanding dinner at the Garden of Eden whose décor and ambience was the best we have seen anywhere in the world.   The next morning we visited the Catholic Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul with its stunningly beautiful wooden interior, then we wandered around the markets and streets capturing the mix of modern, dilapidated and old colonial.    We finally returned to French Guiana totally shattered after a very, very full 48 hours.
