9/12 Royal Lancers took 150 soldiers on a Battlefield Study to show the 1914 retreat from Mons. Starting at the Menin Gate in Ypres they moved through the key towns and villages of the action by the 9th Lancers and the 12th Lancers. In particular the soldiers looked at the sites of the VC winners and their graves. The 4 days culminated in the presentation of H19 operational medals in Fretoy with a march to Montcel where the final lance-on-lance battle took place. HRH The Duke of York KG, Colonel in Chief, flew in to Fretoy to present the medals and meet families who had travelled to the area to be with their loved ones as the medals were presented. 9/12 Lancers will become The Royal Lancers under A2020 in April 2015.
